Poetry Journal
FAST START (our Poetry Journal) has two parts – reading the poem or passage and playing with the words. A FAST START session should take about 10-15 minutes.

- Read the poem to your child. Do this two or three times. Read it slowly and expressively. Point to the words as you read.
- Read the poem with your child. Do this two or three times. Again, read it slowly and expressively. Point to the words as you read, or let your child point as you read.
- Listen to your child read the poem by himself or herself. Do this two or three times. Have your child point to the words as he or she reads and be sure to tell your child what a good reader he or she is!

Handwriting
Handwriting will come home once a week in your child's Reading Folder. It is best to watch your child form the letters so your child will learn good habits. Handwriting should be completed in pencil.
Reading Group Folder
Your child's Reading Group folder will come home at least once a week. Please return the folder the following day. If the folder is not returned, your child may not be able to participate in reading group.
Tips:
Your child should read the book to an adult.
After reading praise your child for something great. (You pointed to each word on the page! You remembered the sight word "he". You looked at the picture to help you figure out the word! You read fluently, just like a teacher. You used expression when you saw the question mark!)
Ask your child a question about the book. (Who was in this story? Where did the story take place? How did -the character- feel? Did you like this story? Why?)
