Waterloo BEST, PBIS
What is PBIS?
Put simply, it is a proactive approach to further promote a positive school climate to ensure academic success. This initiative is meant to reinforce the positive behaviors of students doing what is expected of them as well as supporting students who need additional support to reach the school wide expectations of BEST: Being respectful, Embracing differences, Spending time learning and Taking responsibility
Our goal is to increase the amount of instructional time our students receive. We’re consistently defining, teaching, reinforcing, and monitoring positive behaviors.
Traffic Light
Students will see a stop light in each classroom. Every morning, students begin their day on green. Students that receive repeated reminders for not following the BEST will move to yellow, signifying a warning.
Developmentally, kindergartners are learning so many things and they need frequent reminders. Therefore, students are provided with many re-teachings and modeling in an effort to promote good choices and habits each and every day.
We want our students to be successful and learn from their mistakes so students can always earn their way back to green if they are on yellow. If the misbehavior continues, however, the student will move to red for the remainder of the morning.
In the afternoon, students start over on green and the cycle repeats.
Students will color in an individual stop light chart at mid-day and in the afternoon. These charts will come home in the backpack on Friday.
BEST Bucks
Students will earn a BEST Buck when they are “caught” doing their Waterloo BEST. When a Buck is earned, the students will put the white copy in a basket in their classroom and keep the yellow copy. The yellow copies will be brought home. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE SAVED. Kindergarten does not do a BEST Buck trade in as the older grades do. The yellow copies are a way for the parents to know that their child has been doing his Waterloo BEST at school.

On Friday:
- A student will earn a visit to the treasure chest IF they earn all green traffic lights for the entire week.
- On Friday afternoons, the stop light chart will be sent home for parents to review.
- Each Friday, a BEST Buck will be drawn from the basket in each classroom. The winner will receive a special reward. The more BEST Bucks that each student has earned that week, the better the chance to win.
